Research & Development / Innovation
A series of funded research topics at the Center for Experimental Structures lead by Ajmal Aqtash,
as Principal Investigator, to prototype, test, and scale for commercial product development.
The topics explored integrate both software and hardware development for the next-gen technologies in
Ag-Tech, Clean-Tech, Urban-Tech, & Eco-Tech.

3d Printing Architecture / Next-Gen Urban-Tech / Automated Robotic Construction
2019 - Currently being Developed (WIP)
Research Assistants: Noah Rosenberg, Anna Kondrashova, Brandon Paniagua
Gantry-Crane meets Robot form-factor to create flexible & collaborative production methods for Additive Construction to meet the growing demand for housing. The research effort explores automated 3D Printing models (Gantry Printing vs Factory Printing vs Curb-Side Printing) in practice currently, and asks the questions related to determining the extent of automation on a construction site.

3D Printed House Design 001 / Next-Gen Urban-Tech / Automated Robotic Construction
2019 - Currently being Developed (WIP)
Research Assistants: Noah Rosenberg,
The research effort seeks to explore, develop, and produce a series of architectural case studies evaluating the potential for an organic design approach to additive layering, and more importantly, to better understand methods of layering and its impact on the construction industry. A rigorous effort & focus is placed on developing a series of topological taxonomies of Typical & A-Typical conditions to recognize the total array of transitional relationships between the column, the floor, and the wall via a structural undertone.

Geo-Ponics / Next-Gen Ag-Tech / Vertical Farming leveraging Ceramic Structures
2016 - Currently being Developed (WIP)
Research Assistant: Robinson Strong, Maralina Moore, Barbara Miglietti
Developed new method to grow vertically using soil. Using principles of Morphology to re-insert soil as a solution for vertical farming more effectively. Vertical farming is an innovation to handle future food demands and offer an alternative to the adverse ecological impact of traditional agriculture techniques.

AIR E-Quality / Next-Gen Clean-Tech / Bio-Plastic Carbon Capture Structures
2014 - 2018
Research Assistants: Robinson Strong, Hayden Minick, Vahhab Aboonour, Barbara Miglietti
SuperCell platform seeks to reintroduce the natural plant world to urban environments to reduce the life threatening & burdensome effects of air pollution via phytoremediation, coupled with sensors/IOT to monitor air quality levels.

Environmental Simulator / Testing Chamber for Growing Plant Structures
2012 - 2014
Research Assistants: Robinson Strong, Hayden Minick, Alex Vasilyev, Barbara Miglietti
Instrument was designed to explore/discover new methods for growing plant structures within a controlled chamber, simulating dry, wet, warm, & cool weather conditions.

Soft Inflatables / Next-Gen Eco-Tech / Renewable Energy Wind Harvesting Structures
2014 - 2016
Research Assistants: Robinson Strong, Hayden Minick, Vahhab Aboonour
Origami meets Inflatable Sails designed to adjust its form-factor to shifts in prevailing wind direction-patterns, to maximize wind harvesting

Omni Wind Simulator / Wind Testing Apparatus
2012 -2014
Research Assistants: Robinson Strong, Hayden Minick, David Franck, Barbara Miglietti
Instrument was designed to explore/discover new methods for harvesting wind. The Wind Testing Apparatus was needed for prototyping the next gen wind-harvesting surface topologies. Instrument is a one-of-kind simulator capable of 360 degrees airflow patterns.
